Well, it's been a full year since the change of power. Just about, anyway. I honestly didn't think I would be making more of these hats at this moment in time, but the resistance is still going strong! Requests for more hats have been made for this year's Women's March and I'm glad to help. Naturally, this isn't "just a hat" and there are lots of different opinions out there about whether the pussyhat's day is over, or that the meaning has been corrupted, or what have you. I have a lot of thoughts on the subject, but I'm going to leave it at this: I will continue to make them for the people who want them. If you are also making them and would like a quicker pattern to follow, then here you go!
As many of you know, the original hat pattern is a rectangle, folded in half and seamed on the sides. I choose to make them in the round and graft the top.
Size: approx. 21" head circumference
Needle: US 15 circular (16")
Yarn: Red Heart Grande (one hat per skein) or Wool Ease Thick and Quick (two hats per skein)
Gauge (unblocked, stockinette)
a) Red Heart Grande = 8 sts x 11.5 rows = 4"
b) Wool Ease Thick and Quick = 9 sts x 13.5 rows = 4"
Pattern
CO 38 sts, join in the round
Work a (k1, p1) rib for 2"
Switch to stockinette (knit every round)
a) Using Red Heart Grande: continue in stockinette until hat is 8.5" total
b) Using Wool Ease Thick and Quick: continue in stockinette until hat is 9" total
Stop at the beginning of the round. You will now graft the first half of sts with the second half of sts using the kitchener stitch*. It's all set up, just start grafting the first stitch in the round with the last stitch in the round and work your way back to the middle of the round, where you will run out of sts and finish your hat.
* If you don't want to graft, just BO the entire hat and seam across the top (however you choose) to create the flat top edge.
Cut yarn, secure, and sew in ends. Put it on your head, pinch the ears forward, and RESIST!
